Below you will find the descriptions for the courses I took while completing my Master's of Arts in Education (MAED) program at Michigan State University.
CEP refers to the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education. ED refers to the Department of Education. TE refers to the Department of Teacher Education.
CEP 843
Spring 2011
Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics and Educational Implications
Instructor: Summer Ferreri
CEP 843 was the first course in my Masters program. With the rise in individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), this course was designed as an introduction to the different disorders. Through this course, I learned what qualifies an individual under the Spectrum, how to do referrals, and some interventions. I researched language development and interventions for students with ASD, observed a child on the Autism Spectrum, and assisted in making a transition plan for that child.
ED 800
Summer 2011
Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Instructors: Steven Weiland and Nathan Clason
ED 800 provided the foundation for educational learning. In this course, we looked at the essential questions through different philosophies of education. This self-paced course led me to think about how to use teacher inquiry, how environment plays a factor in student learning, and how the mind and intelligence assist our teaching. I was reminded through my learning that all students do not come into the classroom with the same experiences or intelligences.
TE 846
Summer 2011
Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Instructor: Laurel Disney
This course was used to fulfill the reading requirement for professional certification by the State of Michigan. TE 846 was designed to explore instructional practices and assessements for literacy. During that summer, I tutored two students in reading using the assessments and instructional practices introduced during the course. This course provided a great overview of the strategies to creating a strong literacy program.
CEP 802
Fall 2011
Developing Positive Attitudes Toward Learning
Instructors: Evelyn R. Oka and Laurie Benson
CEP 802 was designed to assist with motivating students to learn. During this course, we looked at several case studies and determined why an individual was unmotivated and how to create a more positive attitude with learning. This course helped me work towards finding intrinsic motivators for my students as opposed to extrinsic motivators such as candy, stickers, etc. I spent time observing the students in my classroom to assess unmotivational qualities and design a project that would help one of my students have a better experience with learning.
TE 848
Spring 2012
Writing Assessment and Instruction
Instructor: Anne Heintz
Writing can be a challenging subject to teach. Through this course, I learned about and explored various writing genres. The course was designed around exploring the best practices for writing and trying some of them in our classroom. We spent time writing our own genres. I created a letter writing unit for my students to assist with the theory that students should write for an authentic audience.
TE 842
Summer 2012
Elementary Reading Assessment and Instruction
Instructor: Meghan Block
TE 842 was designed to dig deeper into reading assessments and instruction at the elementary level. This course helped me focus on my own classroom set-up for reading and how I address areas of motivation and comprehension with my students. A focus project was developed to explore areas of reading that are troublesome to me. I created a guided reading model to further my teaching of this strategy.
CEP 850
Summer 2014
Technology and Literacy for Students with Mild Disabilities
Instructors: Cindy Okolo and Rachel Kopke
Technology is becoming widely used as a way to assist students with mild disabilities. In this course, we explored several different technology options as accessibility tools from text to speech tools to concept maps. We learned specific terminology that accompanies students with mild disabilities such as accessible instructional materials (AIM). I identified learning challengings for students with mild disabilities and provided technology tools to ease the challenges.
CEP 841
Summer 2014
Classroom Management in the Inclusive Classroom
Instructor: Troy Mariage
CEP 841 was designed to explore various management styles in the classroom. With the rise of the inclusive classroom, classroom teachers are asked to accommodate students with special needs. Throughout this course, I learned about positive behavior intervetion, conflict resolution, and how to arrange the classroom and schedule to prevent unwanted behaviors. This course opened my eyes to many different techniques to use in the classroom to accommodate all of my students.
TE 831
Spring 2015
Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology
Instructor: Jon M. Wargo
This course was designed around the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework for teaching with technology. Technology continues to grow and teachers are being asked to incorporate it more often in the classroom. I explored different forms of technology from creating my own video to creating a concept map for my students. We were asked to take a unit we either already taught or would like to teach and use technology to enhance the learning experience. This allowed me the opportunity to have my students use digital storytelling to enhance their narrative writing.
ED 870
Summer 2015
Capstone Seminar
Instructors: Matthew Koehler, Sarah Keenan, Spencer Greenhalgh, and Christopher Seals
This was the last course in my Masters of Arts in Education program. The Capstone Portfolio Course was designed to reflect on the Masters program as a whole. I created a web portfolio outlining my work throughout my program. This course provided an opportunity to reflect on my goals as a learner, how I want to continue my learning, and what my program provided me for my future.
